UX Workshop Series

Problem

With more junior designers and interns joining the team and due to the nature of the agency, there was little time in the week to pass design skills between members of the design team. Another concern was the growing gap in understanding if UX design within the front end development team.

Solution

The design team will host a series of workshops over the course of the summer. Each workshop will be 1 hour every other Friday afternoon starting in June. All members of the agency from interns to senior front end developers are welcome to join and learn more about the UX design process.

execution

I created a google document as a proposal and included an outline of the following for each workshop:

  1. Purpose

  2. Preparation needed to run the workshop

  3. Instructions for the activity of the workshop

  4. Tools necessary for the workshop

Purpose

This workshop is intended to provide a hands-on learning experience of the user experience design process. Participants will walk away with a greater understanding of how the design team delivers UX solutions.

schedule

  1. Ideation Workshop - June 10

  2. Workflow Mapping Workshop - June 24

  3. Wireframe Collaboration Workshop - July 8

  4. Mock Concept Testing Workshop - July 22

  5. Visual Critiques / Brand Development Workshop - August 5

  6. Prototyping Workshop - August 19

  7. Mock Usability Testing Workshop - September 2

Outcome

There was a wide range of participation from design interns to several members of the front end development team. I fostered greater communication between senior design members and their colleagues resulting in a better understanding of how the design team provides UX solutions to clients.

Participant Feedback

“It’s fun to participate in the process and be creative”

“I like hearing explanations from senior designers and getting tips”

“I like hearing listening to others’ perspectives and bouncing ideas off of each other”

Conclusion

I learned I should rely more on other team members to share their members and help them prepare to run their own workshop. Also, some workshops - like Brand Development - should be split into their own workshop series as there is too much to cover in just one hour. While the series is mostly a success, there is still room for improvement.
